Conventional Launcher Applications

Based on the models in the model library, with this ASTOS application you easily determine

  • optimal 3-DOF trajectories of vertical launch systems with parallel or serial staging,
  • optimal settings for throttleable rocket engines, and
  • optimal vehicle or engine sizing parameters
  • on single or dual-payload missions,
  • including coast arcs

The application also provides an automatic start-up based on the mission specifications. Gravity-turn, required velocity, and other guidance laws are used to determine an initial trajectory and guesses for the control functions. This trajectory serves as an initial guess for the optimization.

The software has been tested on various ESA launchers such as Ariane 44LP into GTO, Ariane 5 into Molnija orbit, Ariane 5/Hermes into LEO, Ariane 5 into an escape orbit, Ariane 5 dual payload into LEO/GTO, Ariane 5 dual payload into SSO/LEO, Ariane 5 vehicle design for escape orbit.

Other verifications were performed with trajectory optimization tools from The Boeing Company (OTIS) and from CNES (OPTAX).
